How Trust Really Works: The CROP Model

Updated: 5 days ago

At Koliso, we talk a lot about trust — how to build it, how to repair it, and how to lead with it. But trust isn’t a vibe. It’s not mysterious. It’s not even subjective. Trust is something we build — deliberately — through consistent behavior.

That’s why we use the CROP Model of Trust.

It breaks trustworthiness into four observable traits:

Competent, Reliable, Open, and Principled.

They build on each other. Start at the top. If one breaks down, the rest get shaky fast.

Competent–“I can do what I say.”

Trust starts with competence.

  • Do you know your stuff?

  • Do you prepare before you deliver?

  • Are you confident enough to ask for help when you’re out of your depth?

Without this foundation, the rest won’t land.

Reliable–“I will do what I say.”

Being competent is great — but are you consistent?

  • Do you follow through?

  • Do you set clear expectations and keep them?

  • Do you communicate when plans change?

Reliability builds predictability — and that’s comforting in a chaotic world.

Open–“You will see what I do.”

This is where trust gets more personal.

  • Do people understand your reasoning, not just your decisions?

  • Can you accept (and invite) feedback?

  • Are you honest when you make mistakes?

Openness makes it safe for others to do the same.

Principled–“I will do what I should.”

This is the deepest layer.

  • Are your actions aligned with shared values?

  • Do you act with integrity — even when no one’s watching?

  • Are you fair and consistent with others?

Principled behavior earns lasting trust. It’s how trust survives pressure.

Use It as a Lens

If you’re asking, “Can I trust this person?” — start at the top.

Are they competent? Reliable? Open? Principled?

If you’re earning trust, the same applies.

Start with competence, and let your actions do the talking.

Now Try This

Which of the four do you most lean on?

Which one could use a little more attention?

At Koliso, we believe trust is too important to leave to chance.

Let’s build it with purpose.
